The number of Louisianans seeking unemployment benefits for the first time rose last week after a drop earlier this month, while the number of “continued” claims decreased by nearly 45,000.

Initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ending Aug. 15 rose to 14,365 from the previous week’s total of 11,131, according to Louisiana Workforce Commission. For a comparison, during the week ending Aug. 17, 2019, 1,994 initial claims were filed.

The four-week moving average of initial claims decreased to 14,352 from the previous week’s average of 18,781.

“Continued claims” for the week ending Aug. 15 decreased to 255,068 from the previous week’s total of 299,974. The continued claims were above the comparable figure of 16,787 for the week ending Aug. 17, 2019.

The four-week moving average of continued claims decreased to 301,717 from the previous week’s average of 316,229.

Gov. John Bel Edwards said Tuesday that the state should start issuing checks for $300 in weekly federal coronavirus unemployment aid next week. But as many as 87,000 people receiving state unemployment may not be eligible for the federal assistance.

Edwards said 67,000 people receive too little in state unemployment to qualify for the federal benefits, while another 20,000 currently receiving state unemployment assistance not tied to the coronavirus outbreak won’t be eligible unless they can show their job losses are linked to the pandemic.
