Scottsdale and Maricopa County will split costs for workforce development services at Vista del Camino Community Center, following a newly approved agreement.

Scottsdale City Council approved resolution No. 11804, an intergovernmental agreement between the two entities, which dates back to the late 1990s.

According to a city staff report, Scottsdale and Maricopa County began informally providing career-related services at Vista del Camino, 7700 E. Roosevelt St., in 1998 as a need was then identified for residents seeking crisis assistance while under-employed or unemployed.

In 2008, the relationship was formalized to operate and jointly manage the community center. Throughout the years, additional IGAs were adopted to continue the joint operation at Vista del Camino.

The formal agreement with the county makes the Vista del Camino Career Center the only career center in Scottsdale and the mid-point in the Valley for career services between the East Valley Career Center in Gilbert, and the West Valley Career Center in west Phoenix.

In Scottsdale, the Vista del Camino Career Center continues to meet the growing employment needs of the community, according to the city staff report.

Services offered range from initial assessment, resumes creation/review and some participants with more intensive services. Also provided at the career center are job searching, resume writing workshops, computer classes, interviewing skills classes and financial literacy programs.

In fiscal year 2018-19, the career center had 3,262 contacts and 651 workshop participants.

Through the most recent contract extension, the city integrated a part-time county workforce development coordinator position that works 20 hours at Vista del Camino.

The newly approved IGA with the Maricopa County Workforce Development Division will allow for Vista del Camino to house a full-time workforce development coordinator, as well as county-owned computers and office equipment.

The total cost of contracted services is $91,336 with Scottsdale being responsible for 33%, or $30,141 of that total.

Scottsdale will pay its portion of the services through Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Prop. 202 Tribal Gaming funds.

This agreement will allow the city to support workforce development activities and training efforts that will assist the city’s employers in attracting and retaining top talent, as well as provide job seekers with Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act program services, the report states.

The IGA will be effective until June 30, 2021, and may be extended two additional one-year terms.
