ORANGE, Ohio
Warrant, traffic stop: Harvard Road, Orange Place
A patrol officer running automatic registration checks on passing cars along Interstate 271 came back with a license plate hit on a northbound Buick around 7:15 a.m. Sept. 3 as it exited onto Harvard Road.
The crime computer showed that the car’s owner, a Euclid man, 41, had an active, full-extradition warrant for a probation violation on a weapons offense through the U.S. Marshal’s office.
This led to a felony traffic stop, with guns drawn and police noting that they could not see into the car because of the tinted windows.
The driver also would not roll down the car windows, as police ordered, but eventually opened the driver’s door. A Garfield Heights woman, 37, got out and filmed the proceedings on her cell phone.
The actual suspect was not in the car, and the woman, who remained uncooperative as she was briefly placed in a cruiser, was released and advised to remove the tint from the car windows.
Licence plate alert: Jackson and Lander roads
After receiving a license plate alert from the village Flock camera network for a 2001 Dodge Durango listed as stolen out of Cleveland on the evening of Sept. 1, a patrol officer on Brainard Road located and followed the SUV.
They noticed that the driver, later identified as a Shaker Heights man, 61, was not wearing his seatbelt.
The driver, who appeared to be nervous, claimed to be an agent for the Internal Revenue Service, assigned to their criminal division. He gave police various employee I.D. numbers and contacts.
He was eventually given the option of calling an IRS supervisor from the Bedford Jail, after police found a Smith & Wesson M&P .380 pistol loaded with five rounds in the pocket of the sweater he was wearing while sitting in the back of a cruiser.
Police also seized three glass smoking pipes, at least one used; a small bag of suspected marijuana; and an unknown white powder crystal substance that was to undergo further testing.
Receiving stolen property (felony): Orange Place
After receiving a stolen-car alert in the immediate area at 4:25 a.m. Sept. 1 for a 2020 Nissan -- listed as a rental out of Brook Park, but reportedly taken from the renter’s home address -- police located the car in the lot at Hampton Inn.
They went to a hotel room and arrested a Cleveland man, 31, who initially denied any knowledge, but then turned over two sets of keys to the car, police said.
Left of center, impaired driving: Lander Road
A Solon man, 42, was stopped after a patrol officer reported seeing his 2019 Lexus drift over the center line four times between Smithfield and Emery roads around 11 p.m. Sept. 5.
The driver refused to take a Breathalyzer test and was arrested, then released on personal bond. A dog riding in the car with him at the time was turned over to a friend.
Attempt to locate, missing/found person: Park Avenue
Orange officers went to Pinstripes in Pinecrest around 3:30 p.m. Sept. 5 and located a boy, 15, who had been reported missing by Cleveland police.
Improper license plates: Harvard, Lander roads
A Euclid man, 37, was stopped and cited around 10:45 a.m. Sept. 3 when police noticed that all of the registration stickers and expiration dates had been painted over on a homemade trailer attached to his truck. The owner said he had traded the trailer for one of his own, plus $100.
