SAN DIEGO — Mired in an ugly 4-for-37 funk that caused him to show outward frustration during Friday’s 6-3 win, Jose Altuve did not start Saturday’s game against the Padres.
“I just decided to give him off because he’s been struggling,” manager Dusty Baker said. “We all struggle from time to time, it’s just that he’s not used to struggling. When you’ve had the career this guy has had, struggle is something that never enters your mind or presents itself. I thought today would be a good day to give him off.”
Since July 31, Altuve’s OPS has sagged from .872 to .810. He did not hit a home run in August after hitting 18 between June and July. Altuve slugged just .318 and had a .621 OPS during 119 August plate appearances.
Altuve started September 1-for-8. He struck out against Padres reliever Daniel Hudson on four pitches to end the ninth inning of Houston’s win on Friday night. After he did, Altuve showed a rare visible sign of rage, slamming his batting helmet and tossing his bat to the side.
Baker batted right fielder Michael Brantley leadoff in Altuve’s absence. Aledmys Díaz played second base.
