Worcester State University students can return to classrooms in the fall semester with continued COVID-19 testing and preventative measures and with no hikes to room and board and other fees, school officials announced Sunday.
President Barry Maloney told school officials last week that in-person learning will resume this fall, with percentages resembling classes offered in the fall of 2019 before the pandemic hit the U.S.
“I have pledged to couple the return to a full campus experience — in our residence halls and our classrooms — with a continued surveillance testing program next fall, even if new cases drop to zero, so that we can be certain the widespread vaccinations are protecting our campus,” Maloney said in a statement. “I know many of you are yearning to have the full in-person campus experience, and we aim to provide it this coming fall.”
Safety protocols will remain a part of campus activities for students, faculty and staff, the university said.
Additionally, the Board of Trustees voted last week to freeze fees for the upcoming school year.
Presented by Maloney and advocated by Student Trustee Anna Johnson and the Student Government Association, the move will keep undergraduate day school fees at 2020-21 levels, totaling $9,616. Tuition of $970 is set by the state and hasn’t changed in almost two decades, but each state university Board of trustees sets the costs for room, board and other university fees.
“We feel that students have experienced enough during this pandemic,” Johnson said in a statement. “Not having an increase for room, board, and fees would be one less concern.”
