COMMUNITY CHEST DEFEATED, PLAN OF AID IS PROPOSED

The community chest proposition was defeated in the Chamber of Commerce referendum by 18 votes. Although there were 201 members who voted at the final election for directors of the Chamber of Commerce, not all of them voted on the referendum of the community chest. There were 180 votes canvassed on the referendum, which made a vote of 91 necessary for a decision. Of the total 81 were cast in favor of the establishment of a community chest whereas 99 voted in opposition to same.

A great deal of satisfaction is being expressed because of the decisive vote on the question, as no room is now left for an argument to again bring up the same for discussion. Had the community chest been adopted by a narrow margin, there would have been grave doubt of its success with comparatively strong sentiment against it.

The opposition have now offered this solution for organizations to secure financial support in the community. A committee from the Chamber of Commerce should investigate every request made for funds. It should approve or disapprove the request. Public announcement should be made of the committee’s action and in case of an approval, then such organization should be permitted to solicit funds through the columns of the newspaper, but not by means of a campaign or drive as was common during the war period.

The opposition to the community chest was to a great extent due to a disfavor of organized drives because of the coercion and pressure used to force people to donate to causes in which their sympathies were not entirely in favor.

LOCAL AND PERSONAL

An epidemic of what is known as Manila smallpox has been prevalent in Talent. The schools were closed for a few days last week, but the disease is claimed to be under control. Only a few cases were reported, and these, it is claimed, were of a very mild form. — Ashland Tidings.

The near approach of Easter was reflected in the very light patronage at the local hotels Friday and today, and the comparatively few passengers on the trains passing through the city. Most everyone who can possibly do so likes to spend Easter at home.

----------

A meeting was held at the public library here this afternoon of citizens of the county interested in forming a Jackson County historical society.
