COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gov. Mike DeWine will update the public on the state’s response to the coronavirus Thursday afternoon, after threatening the previous day that bars, restaurants and gyms may close, and announcing new sanctions for retail businesses where people aren’t masked.
The briefing will likely shed some more light on how DeWine’s announcements will work in practice. Lt. Gov. Jon Husted will join DeWine.

On Wednesday evening, DeWine said he was repurposing state employees to check retail establishments for mask compliance, and they would issue graduated sanctions for noncompliance, which include closure for 24 hours.
He also said that if state trends in coronavirus cases, deaths and hospitalizations don’t change, he will close the bars, restaurants and gyms. He said his team will look at the issue a week from today.
In addition to a revised mask order, DeWine said in the next few days he will have a new social gathering order that will require people at weddings, funerals and other gatherings to wear masks except while eating or drinking. The order will also prohibit dancing and games at social gatherings.
The state is seeing exponential rises in the number of new coronavirus cases.
