A mere five words, “Don ‘t Give Up the Ship,” stitched on a flag in 1813 in a tiny frontier village produced one of the most enduring symbols in United States history.
During the war of 1812, the United States declared war on Great Britain and on September 10, 1813, Lake Erie was the site of a stunning defeat of the Royal Navy by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. The victory cut off British and Indians from their supply bases in the west. During the battle with Perry’s flagship, The Lawrence, heavily damaged, hoisted this flag and it became visible to other crews, which inspired them all to fight on to victory.
Two hundred years later those few words – “Don’t Give Up the Ship” – have become a stirring, unofficial motto of the U.S. Navy. The details of the War of 1812, the battle of Lake Erie and Oliver Hazard Perry’s battle flag may be unknown to many, but the meaning is still fitting for us today.
Our Heavenly Father has much to say about His people not giving up in the face of the trying times we live in today. Jeremiah 1:19 says, “I don’t have to be poor, because God has destined me for abundance.” Psalms 10:22 says, “I don’t have to be sick, because God has destined me for health.” 1 John 5:4 says, “I don’t have to be defeated, because God has destined me for victory.” Let us then accept all that God has destined for us. May each one walk in their specific, God given destiny and we will take our future by storm, individually and collectively, knowing that Our Loving Father has the last word in all things.
