Last year when Joshua Lozano gathered his crew of “ragtag” chefs he held his charity dinner to provide Thanksgiving meal kits to families in need in a tent on the sand in Huntington Beach.

This year Lozano, who sells Basque style burnt cheesecakes on Instagram as Uprising OC, is bringing the event to a popular bar in Santa Ana.

“It’s Nov. 19 at Vacation Bar in Santa Ana, 6-9 ish,” he texted. “We’re aiming for 50 people and a coursed meal from some of the best chefs in the O.C. The dinner is called ‘Violent Wind’ so the general theme is bold, very aggressive flavors. And we’re keeping it  as seasonal we can.”

As he did last year, he’ll be joined by volunteer chefs from some of the best restaurants in Orange County: Allan Aguiñaga (Hendrix, Laguna Niguel), Cristy Dimas (Toast Kitchen & Bakery, Costa Mesa); Jessica Tiffany (Las Brisas, Laguna Beach); Lucas Gallavan (Mayor’s Table Pacific Pub & Kitchen); Ralph Montes (Polanco Mexican Steakhouse, Manhattan Beach).

The goal of the dinner and a related turkey drive is to feed 250 families. It’s the ninth year for this cause, the Annual Turkey Drive by Chicano Mentoring Association and Bishop Rotary. Last time 200 families received boxes with everything  needed for a full holiday spread. For those considering donating, $50 per box feeds a family of 6-8, but any amount you care to give will help, Lozano said. He will also accept gifts of food.

In a recent phone interview, Lozano urged donors to help in any way they can. “If they can’t donate food, obviously,  monetary is the best bet. And then just kind of spreading the word, helping us get it out there,” he said.

The multi-course dinner will include solterito (Peruvian chopped salad); Leche de Tigre with shellfish and octopus; whole hog porchetta with hoja santa and collard greens; and a three-way dessert.

For those who like the menu but can’t make it to the charity event, Lozano will be holding more pop-up dinners that are simply culinary experiences at the Royal Hen on Balboa Island. The next one will be a wine dinner in collaboration with a Napa Valley vintner in early December and another will be held in January with details still being worked out. “I might be getting together with Chef Danny Castillo at Heritage Barbecue. A big family style dinner with him, but that is not set in stone.”

Expect sophisticated cuisine since Lozano has worked in several fine dining rooms in Orange County including Toast and the Mayor’s Table. He also has a permanent pop-up each weekend at the Royal Hen on Balboa Island, selling his cheesecakes. For now he’s between full-time gigs, but he’s determined that his favorite cause will not skip a year.

“I consider it a blessing and an honor to be able to do it,” Lozano said. “There’s so much negativity in this world. I want to be able to leave a positive legacy for my kids when I pass, knowing that their father was a part of all of these things to help all these wonderful, beautiful people — that’s super important to me.”

Charity dinner: Will be held Thursday, Nov. 19 at Vacation Bar, 204 W. 4th St., Santa Ana. Tickets are $100 per person, cocktails and wine not included but they will be available at the bar. For reservations to the charity dinner, call 714-296-7065.
