JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Construction on I-94 and U.S. 127/West Avenue in Jackson continues to make progress as contractors begin to shut down for the winter, Michigan Department of Transportation officials said.

But motorists can expect to see more closures.

The MDOT project began in summer 2018 and is not expected to be complete until spring 2024, officials said.

MDOT’s most recent update shows that Shirley Drive has reopened, while work continues on the Lansing Avenue bridge over I-94, with the beams over eastbound I-94 being set this week, officials said.

Construction has also been busy around the I-94/U.S. 127/M-50 (West Avenue) interchange. This includes building the new eastbound I-94 bridge over U.S. 127/M-50 (West Avenue) and rebuilding the eastbound I-94 ramp to U.S. 127/M-50 (West Avenue), which is currently closed.

The U.S. 127/M-50 (West Avenue) entrance ramp to eastbound I-94 is scheduled to be closed the week of Nov. 15 in order to make the temporary ramp better for snowplowing, officials said.

Work also continues on concrete paving on the west half of U.S. 127/M-50 (West Avenue) through the area of the interchange. And work is progressing at the new I-94/Elm Road interchange, where the new Elm Road bridge is being built, as well as associated earthwork for the new interchange. Road work connecting to the new bridge won’t be complete until summer 2022, officials said.

It is anticipated that the majority of this year’s work that’s impacting traffic will be wrapped up by late December, officials said.

I-94 traffic is being maintained in its current configuration through the winter. These are the ramp and local road impacts that remain active or are scheduled:

The ongoing work is part of MDOT’s $120-million investment to rebuild and widen I-94 near the Airport Road interchange to just west of the east U.S. 127/I-94 interchange in Blackman and Leoni townships. Funding for this project comes from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state’s economy and carry the most traffic.

More information about the project can be found on MDOT’s website.
