With COVID-19 numbers soaring to highs rivaling the height of the global health crisis, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Department of Health and Human Services Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun will provide an update this morning regarding the continued efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

It's unknown if the governor will announce some further restrictions on activities as younger people are contracting the coronavirus while more people are getting vaccinated.
The update comes a day after hospital officials said they are postponing some elective surgeries and other procedures due to the latest surge in COVID-19 patient admissions and to ensure they have capacity to care for the rising tide of patients sick with COVID-19.
Hospitalizations were near a record high Thursday, with 3,508 COVID-19 patients in Michigan health care facilities.
Michigan's positive COVID-19 case rate was the highest in the U.S. on Thursday, at 492.1 cases per 100,000 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
