CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Unaccompanied Students Initiative is a nonprofit that started its operations in Cheyenne and expanded to Casper earlier this year. USI not only helps put a roof over the heads of 16-20 year old’s, it focuses on teaching them skills they’ll be able to use the rest of their lives.

USI has the ability to house 10-15 kids in need at a time, its Cheyenne program coordinator, Michelle Coronado, said most of the kids that come to them are already in high school. She said USI focuses on three main topics: helping the students graduate, being a guide for what they want their future to look like and building character.

“We really like to focus on character building and most importantly, academic success. Here at the USI we challenge them, like go read a book, go research that. We’re teaching them how to be independent, but also how to be considerate of others,” said Coronado.

For Jazmin Mitchell, a day house parent at USI, she’s around the students almost every day, and being able to watch them learn and grow, makes her proud.

“Especially when it comes to cooking. A lot of them come in with no skills in the kitchen whatsoever and it’s also a bonding experience for the house parent and the student to build that relationship. I really enjoy that they learn things along the way, we learn things about each other, and then they grow and they can do things on their own,” said Mitchell.

Mitchell said she enjoys being a part of an organization that does so much in the Cheyenne community. Speaking of the community, Coronado said USI wouldn’t be able to provide this kind of service to our youth without the Cheyenne community’s support.

USI hopes to continue making a difference in the community and Coronado said if you are a 16-20 year old in need, don’t hesitate to reach out.

For more information or to get in contact with USI you can find its Facebook here, or you can call Coronado at (307)-220-3772.
