KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - On Thursday, the people of Kearney showed their support for area nonprofits for Give Where You Live day. Many of the nonprofits have been very busy with the high demand for their services throughout the pandemic. Other nonprofits have started new projects that need financial support.
This year Yanney Park began work on the new botanical garden. An anonymous donor promised to match donations up to $25,000. By noon, the foundation had already met their goal. The funds will go towards park maintenance and the botanical garden that will be built over the next year.
“It’s important to think about the park and all of our nonprofits in Kearney,” said Tom Tye, Yanney Heritage Park Foundation Board Member. “A lot of them weren’t able to do special events and so it’s important for the Yanney Park and all of our nonprofits to make up for those events they couldn’t do.”
Give Where You Live also is important this year for the Buffalo County Community Partners. They have been offering a wide range of mental health support and have begun a gift exchange for seniors who are isolated through the pandemic. The money they make from Give Where You Live will play a big role in how next year will work for them financially.
“We get about 75% of our funding from grant donations due to the money we get during Give Where You Live,” Executive Director Denise Zweiner said. “So showing our community supports the works that we do helps us leverage a lot more dollars.”
Zweiner said it has been a challenge to navigate their services virtually but the funding to expand programs goes a long way.
“A lot of our conversations right now are all about how we support the children in our community, whether they’re grade school, high school, young adults, they need our support,” Zweiner said.
People can go to givewhereyoulive.net to make donations to their favorite nonprofits. The cut off for donations is midnight Thursday.
