The Patriots offense and special teams each scored two touchdowns and the defense kept the Chargers from getting any as New England took a 28-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Cam Newton moved the ball in the air and on the ground. He completed seven of 10 passes for 42 yards and rushed 12 times for 46 yards and two touchdowns. Damien Harris had 63 yards on 12 carries.
The Patriots took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards. Led by Harris, 65 of those were on the ground. After Newton’s initial touchdown run was called short by replay, the New England quarterback lunged across the line to make it 7-0, 7:10 into the game.
After Michael Badgley missed a 46-yard field goal try on Los Angeles’ first drive, the teams traded punts. Jake Bailey’s landed in the end zone, the Chargers’ wished Tyler Long’s had.
A week after Gunner Olszewski had a punt return called back by a controversial penalty call, the Patriots’ receiver brought back a second-quarter punt 70 yards for his first career touchdown. He spent most of the last 20 yards tiptoeing just inside the right sideline to put the Patriots up 14-0, 58 seconds into the second quarter.
It was the Patriots’ first punt return for a touchdown since 2014.
New England added to their edge with a 2-yard run from Newton with 51 seconds left that made it 21-0. But they still weren’t done.
The Chargers rushed up the field to give them a shot at a long field goal. They’d have been better off letting the clock run out.
Cody Davis blocked Badgley’s 58-yard try on the last play of the half. The ball bounced right to Devin McCourty who scooped and ran it back for a touchdown that stretched the lead to 28-0.
The Patriots will kickoff to start the second half.

- Newton cracked double digits in rushing touchdowns for the third time in his career.
- Jonathan Jones suffered a neck injury. His return is questionable.
