For the second week in a row, initial jobless claims in Ohio increased, according to data reported to the U.S. Department of Labor by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services.
ODJFS on Thursday, Oct. 1, reported that 17,944 Ohioans filed initial unemployment benefits for the week of Sept. 20-26, up 509 from 17,435 the previous week.
The state also reported that there were 301,274 filings for continued jobless benefits, down nearly 20,000, or more than 6%, from 321,057 claims the previous week. Continued claims represent unemployment filings submitted after an initial claim.
The jobless data comes on the same day that Gov. Mike DeWine released a statement announcing he would sign Ohio House Bill 614, which will create the Unemployment Compensation Modernization and Improvement Council tasked with making recommendations on the efficiency of the unemployment benefits process.
There have been 1,733,734 jobless claims filed in Ohio over the last 28 weeks since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. That's more than the combined total of claims filed during the last four years.
In that same time period, the state has distributed more than $6.8 billion in unemployment compensation payments to more than 813,000 Ohioans.
In addition, ODJFS has issued more than $6.3 billion in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance payments to more than 585,000 claimants, who have lost jobs but are not traditionally eligible for those benefits.
