David Flowers has some advice for everyone who has had their inbox filled again and again with rejection emails.

Don’t give up.

Flowers is speaking from experience. Flowers has been applying for varsity basketball head coaching positions for years before he finally got a break.

Hopkins High School has hired Flowers to coach its varsity girls team.

“It’s really surreal, quite honestly,” Flowers said. “It has been my goal for a long time to be a varsity coach, and I’ve put in a lot of applications over the years and heard a lot of nos. I don’t think it has quite sunk in yet that someone is finally taking a shot on me. I’m just excited to get going.”

Flowers coached Zeeland East’s boys freshmen team last winter, and before that, he served as the junior varsity girls coach at Zeeland West for three seasons. He also coached the Lowell freshmen girls for three years and was a junior varsity assistant at Wyoming Park.

Flowers is now eager to lead a program of his own. He will take over a team that finished 12-9 a year ago.

“The biggest thing is building relationships with the girls, the administration at Hopkins and the community,” said Flowers, who is a paraprofessional at Zeeland East. “John Robinson did a good job building a strong foundation over four or five years, and Coach (Tim) Hoogewind did a good job of continuing that last year. We are going to play hard, we are going to play smart and we are going to play together and see what happens. I think we are in position to start competing right away."

The 2019-2020 girls basketball season was cancelled in March across Michigan prior to the regional finals due to the coronavirus pandemic. While there are plenty of uncertainties on what the upcoming season will hold, Flowers said the Vikings will be ready.

“There are a lot of unknowns,” Flowers said. "But I think the biggest thing is to take all of the precautions very, very seriously and doing our part to help contain that spread. We are taking it day-by-day and enjoying every day that we can be in the gym and all of those things. But is going to be different for sure.

“I think people can expect from us a team that likes to play fast and aggressive on both sides of the ball. I think they are going to see a team that is going to play together and for each other and extremely hard every night. The one thing we will be able to count on is that we will always play hard.”

Football was Flowers' game at Wyoming Park. Flowers, who graduated high school in 2007, found a future in basketball, however.

“When I was a senior in high school, I took a video production class,” Flowers said. "We got extra credit to go film the game, so I would go film all of the girls games. Kirk Kambestad (now the West Catholic boys coach) was one of the varsity coaches and he was one of my teachers, so I did that.

“At the end of the year, Jake Strotheide, who was the JV coach, invited me to come back and take stats and help out. The rest is history. I owe a lot of thanks to Jake for getting me involved.”
