Confederate monuments in North Carolina have served as backdrops for protests before and again in recent days. Those speaking out against police brutality and racism are gathering at the foot of monuments to the Confederacy, looking for change.
Many see the statues as representative of the culture of racism born from slavery in America and continued through the Jim Crow South.
Rocky Mount decided last week to remove the monument in Battle Park, and on Monday the Durham City-County Committee on Confederate Monuments and Memorials sent a letter to city leaders urging the removal of a base that has stood since a Confederate monument in that city was pulled down in 2017.
"All that we have seen and, in particular what the black citizens of Durham have experienced in terms of the white supremacy and the legacy of white supremacy and racism, it’s time for that base to be removed," said Robin Kirk, co-chair of the committee.
Kandis Faith is concerned about the monument near her home in Louisburg.
She was part of a group that stood guard there Saturday night
"This is a piece of history that was put here way before my time. It’s heritage not hate, and I believe that it needs to be left alone," said Faith.
Several Confederate monuments are still standing in the Triangle and surrounding areas. Many of them could soon become centers of debates as protests continue.
"Obviously we don’t feel very well about it because these statues, we call them, or monuments, have been standing for more than 100 years," said Frank Powell, North Carolina Sons of Confederate Veterans spokesperson. "They are actually memorials. They are memorials to people who died serving the state of North Carolina."
Those who want them removed say the statues represent hate and have been standing too long.
"I think it’s late. I think the talk has gone on for a long time. I would’ve hoped that we would’ve acted sooner," said Kirk.
