With nonprofits still dealing with the impact of the pandemic, this year’s Give to the Max Day finds many of them continuing to struggle.
Thursday marks GiveMN’s 13th annual Give to the Max Day. It’s a statewide day of support to raise money online for thousands of nonprofit organizations and schools across Minnesota.
“I think for nonprofits and schools who are on the front lines serving people in need, it’s clear that the pandemic is still very much ongoing for their day-to-day experience,” said Jake Blumberg, executive director of GiveMN. According to Blumberg, 40 percent of nonprofits use Give to the Max Day as their largest annual fundraising event. For many, Thursday’s giving event is crucial.
Last year, GiveMN listed a number of organizations that have been and continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and organizations that are run by Black, Indigenous and people of color on their website, giving special emphasis to the lasting effects of the pandemic and racial equity. They still have those lists posted on the website.
Last year, a record $30.4 million was raised for nonprofits and schools by GiveMN and Give to the Max Day.
Early donations started Nov. 1 this year, and Blumberg said that more than 3,000 organizations have already received donations before Give to the Max Day.
“The giving trend is ahead of prepandemic giving levels, which is what we’ve seen all year,” Blumberg said. “That gives us a lot of optimism for tomorrow.”
During Give to the Max Day, GiveMN will be adding to contributions that are made every 15 minutes, which is made possible by a partnership with the Bush Foundation.
“So it’s a reason to have fun and to give early and often,” Blumberg said.
Blumberg continued: “We’re hoping donors are able to really dig deep again this year and support the causes they care about because whether it’s front of our minds or not, for those nonprofits, they’re still very much in the middle of an ongoing disaster, frankly.”
Other St. Paul organizations also are matching donations.
The Sanneh Foundation will be matching donations up to $10,000 and the Minnesota Public Radio board of trustees will be matching donations up to $50,000. MPR also has an option when donating to give meals to Second Harvest Heartland.
Visit GiveMN.org to search for the organizations that are participating in this year’s Give to the Max Day. Donations can then be made online through the website.
