CLEVELAND, Ohio -- “Jeopardy!” fans will have to wait until next season to see how long Matt Amodio can keep his incredible run on the popular game show going.
The Medina native ran his win streak to 18 games in the series’ 37th season finale on Friday. He added another $27,201 to his bank account for a running total of $574,801 in prize money. That amount puts him in third place behind only Ken Jennings ($2,520,700) and James Holzhauer ($2,462,216) on the show’s all-time regular season winnings list.
“I have been truly amazed by the opportunity I’ve had to play a game I’ve loved my whole life,” Amodio told cleveland.com. “To have lasted this long has been a dream come true, and I feel especially lucky that I have a little extra time to step back and savor it over the break.”
Amodio, a graduate of Medina High School and the Ohio State University, has been dominating the competition since his first win on July 21. For the second consecutive night, however, the result came down to the final question. In fact, he actually trailed going into “Double Jeopardy!” before taking the lead during the round.
The Ph.D. student from Yale entered “Final Jeopardy!” with a score of $27,200, double his closest opponent, Nicolle Neulist of Chicago. Still, the reigning champ bet $1 even though that meant possibly risking at least a tie if he didn’t come up with the right answer. But Amodio answered the question about 19th century American women correctly to seal the victory.
So, he’ll return to the “Jeopardy!” studios in Los Angeles to defend his title when production resumes later this month. He’ll be greeted by his fifth host as executive producer Mike Richards takes over as the show’s permanent regular host for the upcoming 38th season. Amodio outlasted four guests hosts over his streak: Robin Roberts, LeVar Burton, David Faber and Joe Buck.
New episodes of “Jeopardy!” premiere on Sept. 13.
