Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel made it clear on Tuesday during a media session with reporters that he doesn’t know who UT’s starting quarterback will be this fall.
Heupel said the quarterbacks will earn their roles through the course of training camp.
Over the next couple of weeks, Heupel and his offensive staff will start dwindling reps according to how the quarterbacks perform during camp.
Heupel is proceeding as if he has no clue who the Vols’ starting quarterback will be this fall.
And maybe that’s truly the case. But it’s also possible that Heupel and his staff have a good idea of how this battle will play out.
In fact, offensive coordinator Alex Golesh may have dropped a big hint on Tuesday.
Golesh named the attributes that Tennessee needs in a starting quarterback.
“Ability to run, manage the offense, efficiency, give us the best opportunity to score,” said Golesh when asked about the traits he wants to see in a starting quarterback.
“Ability to run” is the trait that sticks out the most here.
That’s because later during Golesh’s media appearance, he specifically talked about quarterback Joe Milton, a Michigan transfer who arrived at Tennessee after spring practice. And he specifically mentioned Milton’s ability to run.
“He’s as big of a quarterback as I’ve ever been around. … You can win running the football with him,” said Golesh while discussing Milton.
Now, maybe we’re reading too much into this. But it certainly sounds like Milton, who has an impressively strong arm, fits the mold of what Golesh is looking for in a quarterback.
Does that mean the job is his?
Not necessarily. Harrison Bailey, Hendon Hooker, and Brian Maurer are all still in the mix. And one of those three could win the job over Milton (I think this battle will ultimately be between Milton and Bailey).
I don’t think Heupel or Golesh have their mind made up on anyone just yet. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they view Milton as the leader in the clubhouse.
