Editor: Recently, a federal judge in Texas issued a ruling that endangers the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. With the fate of DACA, which allows young immigrants to legally study and work in the U.S., continuing to remain in the balance, it’s important to recognize how critical the program has been for many thousands of young immigrant Coloradans and our communities and economy.
There are almost 14,000 DACA recipients in Colorado, and thanks to the deportation protections and work and education authorizations granted by the program, they have built incredible lives for themselves. Each year, DACA recipients in Colorado pay over $58 million in state and local taxes while wielding over $530 million in total spending power that is poured back into our economy.
Further, many of these Dreamers are working in industries that are essential to the continued recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic – such as the over 30,000 Dreamers nationwide who are working in our health care industry.
Given all that these individuals have done for our communities, Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper should follow their example and work with their colleagues to pass the Dream Act, which would give DACA recipients the chance to earn citizenship After nine years with DACA’s protections, and spending most of their lives here in the United States, these young people deserve some certainty in exchange for all that they do for us.
