Asset owners continue to hire private equity buyout firms. Their hiring activity was about $40 billion annually from 2018 to 2020, and the year-to-date figure is $19.5 billion through mid-August, according to information collected by Pensions & Investments.
Private equity firms have been putting this money to work. In the first half of 2021, the deal total, excluding special purpose acquisition companies, was $539 billion, nearly surpassing 2020's entire $573 billion. By midyear, there was also about $1 trillion of dry powder. The current year could challenge the record for dollar deal volume, which was set in 2006 when private equity buyouts totaled $804 billion.
Private equity funds have been increasing the size of the deals. The average size was $1.1 billion this year compared with $718 million last year. The technology sector attracted a lot of interest this year, accounting for one-third of the number of investments.
