MSU's offensive and defensive lines have battled on even terms through five days of camp

BOZEMAN, Montana (August 11, 2021) – Measuring success in preseason camp can be a moving target, Montana State coach Brent Vigen likes the line-of-scrimmage play he's seen from both the offense and defense in the running game during the first five Bobcat practices.

"That's two-sided, right, our ability to run the football and our ability to stop the run," Vigen said. "You can certainly look at where movement or lack thereof from an offense vs. defense perspective, (evaluate) how that looks. Are our backs seeing what they're supposed to see? I do think we're leaps and bounds ahead of where we were in the spring as far as our discipline on our tracks and our ball security and those types of things."

After three days in helmets and shoulder pads, the Bobcats pass another major marker of the 2021 preseason on Wednesday. That's the day the Cats don full pads and tackle to the ground. Everything through Tuesday has provided the coaching staff a look at technique and effort, but not full-fledged tackle football.

"We haven't tackled yet, we haven't done anything like that," Vigen said. "That ultimately becomes your greatest measure, when there's an outcome to each particular run."

The strongest positive through five days of preseason camp has been the team's health. "I think the good thing right now is that we're full strength on both sides" of the line of scrimmage, he said. "It's good on good. We didn't always have that luxury in the spring."

Vigen also said the clash between O-line and D-line, in particular, has been fairly even. "It's give-and-take, not a one-sided affair," he said. "The offense makes some plays, the defense makes some plays, and with a good team that's usually the mark as you go through fall camp. It's back and forth."

For the remainder of this week, MSU practices at 10 am Thursday, 9:15 am Friday, and 9:30 am Saturday. Vigen indicated all practices are closed to the general public.
