WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Many local small businesses saw surprisingly high sales this holiday season. They’re hoping that continues into the new year with a new wave of stimulus checks hitting bank accounts.
Eva Kaufman, owner of Acornacopia said, “This is the first time that we’ve ever had that kind of community effort on shopping local and I think that says a lot for our community.”
Kaufman said this past holiday season was one of the best her business has ever seen.
“Wichita was really coming and shopping local. We did a lot of group efforts through other stores in Wichita promoting each other’s business and I think that helped the shop local,” said Kaufman.
Sales associate Brenda Schawe said, “We tried to do a couple of events; one for fall, one for holidays to generate traffic, generate email names. That all worked really well.”
Schawe also saw the humbling community support this holiday season as she worked behind the counter at Acornacopia and she said it hasn’t stopped yet.
“We’re going to try to do a lot of things to come in. We’re adding new categories; furniture, blinds, rugs,” said Schawe.
“We’re optimistic. We’ve already bought Christmas for 2021 so we’ve already bought forward,” said Kaufman. “So we’re optimistic that things will go forward. You can’t stop. If you stop you can’t sell.”
“We do a huge Christmas business. We thing that will be very good next year. We think a lot of people are going to have parties and do some fun things because hopefully it opens back up,” said Schawe.
The pandemic gave Kaufman the time and the demand to create a website which has helped keep her business alive. She expects the site to grow her business in 2021.
Schawe said, “That’s helping a lot of customers. They can actually take a look at the inside of our store. So that’s one of the things and they can pick it up, we can deliver It.”
With all of the holiday shopping wrapped up, Kaufman said they’re still seeing a large ‘shop local’ push.
