Longmont police said they believe that the same person who defaced the St. Vrain Memorial Building late last year, returned to commit more vandalism late last week.
Longmont police Sgt. Matt Cage said that the man used spray paint to write: “housing is a human right” and “mental health matters” on the southeast side of the building, 700 Longs Peak Ave. Memorial Building security cameras captured the incident taking place at 8:38 p.m. Friday.
“The male walks up and makes a vulgar display with his hand,” Cage said. “He wrote two things on the building.”
Cage said they believe this same man also spray painted the northeast side of building on Christmas Eve, broke a window and stole an American flag. That damage has since been repaired and the American flag replaced, according to prior reporting.
Longmont Master Police Officer Sara Aerne told the Times-Call late last year that she believed the vandalism may have been in response to the city’s placement of large rocks behind the blue spruce trees at those wall-side alcove locations to discourage homeless people from sleeping overnight.
Police have been following a “couple of loose leads, but nothing that’s identified anyone,” Cage said. He estimated that the cost of damage was $200. If apprehended, Cage said the man could possibly be charged with criminal mischief.
“We would like to figure out who this guy is and get him cited,” Cage said.
Police described the man as white and between the age of 25 and 40 years old.
Cage said anyone who has information on the man’s identity or the situation is encouraged to call him at 303-651-8520. The case number for the first incident is #20-9922 and the case number for the second incident is #21-242.
