SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Jazz All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell and his mother Nicole are incredibly close, and on Monday, which is World Teachers’ Day, they teamed up on the “Today” show to give a surprise to some preschoolers in Connecticut and New York.
The Mitchells will give pairs of Donovan’s signature D.O.N. Issue “Crayola” shoes to two preschool classes in the Constitution State and one class in The Bronx. As part of that, the classes will also receive Crayola products for school use.
Nicole Mitchell, who has been a preschool teacher for many years, said, “Teachers are, as we all know, so underrated, underpaid.”
She said she taught last spring as the coronavirus pandemic began, but is not doing so this school year.
“I just had three months, and it was just hard,” she said. “It was challenging, but we made it happen, and now these teachers are teaching the full year with this cloud over their head, and we just need to make sure we give thanks to them.
“Not just us, but I feel the country in total, as a whole, thank your teachers because they are really, they’re now essential workers,” she continued. “They’re out there with our children and doing the best they can given the circumstances.”
Donovan Mitchell also rehashed what life was like at home with his mom and sister while he quarantined in March after testing positive for COVID-19, and was also asked to give a prediction on who will win the NBA Finals.
The Los Angeles Lakers lead the Miami Heat two games to one.
“At the end of the day, (Anthony Davis) and LeBron (James) are tough,” Mitchell said. “I kind of have my eye on the Lakers pulling through.”
