Preseason Practice Continued Tuesday for Catamount Football - catamountsports.com

Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina returned to practice on the turf at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field on Tuesday afternoon, working through a 13-period session, the first in helmets and shoulder pads this preseason.

WCU worked out for right at two hours, concluding the practice with a highly-competitive 7-on-7 drill between the skill players followed by a thud-up, offense vs defense situational period in some of the first scrimmage action of the preseason. Practice also included position and unit drills with reps rotated through the roster as the Catamounts prepare for the three-nonconference road games this fall.

"It was good to be out here today and to see these guys go and compete," said WCU head football coach Mark Speir after addressing his squad during a post-practice stretch period. "I know that both the players and the coaches had a whole bunch of fun out here today."

Speir said that Tuesday's first practice in shells was kept very basic and was a return to some of the important fundamentals since there was such a long layover for his squad between practices wearing shoulder pads – a layover that dated back to last November before the final game of 2019.

WCU is scheduled to practice again Wednesday and Friday this week. As a reminder, each of WCU's preseason practices this fall are closed to the public.

Fans are reminded that Speir and both offensive coordinator John Holt and defensive coordinator Andy McCollum are scheduled to participate in a "Catamount Conversation" Facebook LIVE broadcast event presented by Stanberry Insurance on Monday, Oct. 26 at 7 pm. The show will be available through Western Carolina's official Facebook page.
