The Rockets will observe Juneteenth on Friday, giving employees a day off and joining teams around the NBA in a virtual viewing of the 2020 documentary “John Lewis: Good Trouble” about the life and legacy of the U.S. Representative and civil rights leader.
June 19 marks the official end to enslavement in the United States when federal orders freeing slaves in Texas reached Galveston on July 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. An official Texas state holiday, Juneteenth is an unofficial holiday nationally recognized in 47 states and the District of Columbia, receiving greater attention given the nationwide protests of racial injustice and the Black Lives Matter movement.
Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins said in a statement on Thursday, “It is a day to stand in solidarity. A day for education, connection and celebration."
Golden State Warriors CEO and president Rick Welts said in a news release, “Celebrating Black history and culture, and our ongoing ally-ship in the fight to end systemic racism, is the most important work we will do as citizens of our communities.”
The Texans had also announced they are observing Juneteenth as a company holiday. The Mavericks, Kings, Bulls, Jazz, Wizards, Heat, 76ers, Pelicans, Knicks, Cavaliers and Hawks are among NBA teams honoring Juneteenth.
