In response to social distancing, ShowMe Healthy Relationships has moved its classes aimed at strengthen healthy relationships online.
Spaces in two free upcoming online classes are still open.
Beginning June 28, the "7 Principles for Making Relationships Work" class for couples will discuss strategies and skills for building friendship, managing challenges and strengthening bonds on Sunday evenings for five weeks.
The "PICK a Partner" class for singles will meet online Thursday evenings from June 25 through July 23 to learn about determining wants and developing healthy ways to start and grow new relationships.
To take part, participants must be at least 18 years old and out of high school. Participants will also need a computer with a camera.
The ShowMe Healthy Relationships program has been providing classes for five years in Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Moniteau and Osage counties. More than 282 couples, 489 singles and 86 incarcerated offenders have participated in the program.
"They're literally for anyone," program manager Nolanda Dodd said of the classes. "You can be never in a relationship before or have been married 40 years."
Dodd said participants have ranged from recent high school graduates to participants more than 80 years old.
"This is the first time that we've actually held them online," she said.
Dodd said moving online has allowed the program to remove barriers and reach more people.
"Being able to offer them online has been a great option for some people," Dodd said.
Though focused on relationships, the classes should not be confused for therapy or counseling.
ShowMe Healthy Relationships recently finished up a five weeks of classes at the Fulton Community Supervision Center, where five residents participated through a laptop the program set up at the facility.
"I just knew there was a need for these ladies to be served," Dodd said.
The overarching goal of the program is to help strengthen the community.
"We know that positive relationships and interpersonal skills are key elements in building stronger communities as well as a foundation of ongoing efforts to move people out of poverty," Dodd said.
To sign up, anyone interested can contact the program at 573-443-8706 ext. 1022, [email protected] or the ShowMe Health Relationships Program Central Missouri Facebook page.
