Dallas police released additional details Tuesday about the beating of a machete-wielding man amid a protest last month, an incident President Donald Trump has repeatedly mischaracterized.
The May 30 attack in the Victory Park area, just north of downtown, was captured in several graphic viral videos, none of which showed the beginning of the altercation.
The footage shows several people throwing things at a man who is yelling and brandishing a long blade. When that man starts running toward someone holding a skateboard, at least a dozen people swoop in and start attacking him.
Several in the group kick and stomp the man, one hits him with a skateboard and at least one more appears to hit him with a large rock. The footage ends with the man unmoving on the street, bloodied and contorted, but a photo showed him sitting up later and receiving treatment from medics.
A Dallas police spokesman said Tuesday that the man went to that area wielding a “machete type knife” at protesters because he allegedly wanted to “protect his neighborhood, not his or any other property/business.”
Witnesses began throwing objects at the man, whom police did not name, in an attempt to disarm him, the spokesman said.
He then confronted the person with the skateboard, who managed to knock the blade away from him but was cut on the hand while doing so, according to police.
That person has not come forward to press charges, police said.
The man with the machete was taken to a hospital and was stable, according to police.
He “did not want to pursue the matter any further,” when detectives spoke to him, police said.
Trump tweeted about the incident May 31, calling for arrests and lengthy jail terms for those in the crowd, and retweeting a baseless claim from a hard rock band’s guitarist claiming that the man was in critical condition, that he had been defending his business and that the attack was carried out by antifa. The guitarist’s tweet has since been removed from Twitter.
The president brought up the beating the following day in a call with governors saying: “I saw what happened in Dallas, where they kicked a guy to death. I don’t know if he died or not, but if he didn’t it’s a miracle. What they did to him, they were kicking him like I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.
“People don’t talk about that. They don’t talk about that. They’re talking about a lot of other things, but they don’t talk about that. But I saw what happened in Dallas. Those kids, they’re all on camera. They’re wise guys. It’s coming from the radical left. You know it, everybody knows it.”
That evening, just after authorities sprayed protesters outside the White House with tear gas, Trump mentioned the attack during a speech in the Rose Garden, using it as an example of why American troops needed to be used to quell demonstrations across the country.
“Innocent people have been savagely beaten, like the young man in Dallas, Texas, who was left dying on the street,” he said.
Police have not giving an update on the man’s condition, saying that they only do so in the instance that someone has died.
Authorities have not alleged that the attack had anything to do with antifa — a broad, anti-fascist movement without any clear hierarchy.
