Five hundreds families will be able to take home fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs and meat on Saturday morning in Pinellas County.
LULAC Pinellas and Puerto Rico Connect, both led by Eliseo Santana, will be distributing free food for families at Good Samaritan Church, 6085 Park Boulevard, in Pinellas Park starting at 11 a.m., according to Santana.
Santana said he hopes the food drive will help those affected by the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
No registration or documentation is required, and the first 500 people will get food so long as they show up, he said. Food will be loaded into the trunk of cars so contact is minimized.
Santana is also running for Pinellas County Sheriff.
He said with the mass unemployment from coronavirus, he wanted to offer families help while they wait for their unemployment checks.
“There’s a huge discomfort in the unknown,” he said. “We just want to bring a little joy, a little hope and security, a smile.”
Food drives like the one on Saturday are expected every two or three weeks, Santana said.
