Douglass Community Services continued to meet needs as weather forced them to close - WGEM

HANNIBAL (WGEM) -- Winter weather has forced many places to close their doors in the past few days. Even food pantries, which provide essential services every day, have been forced to adjust.

In the past year, there's been a 25% increase in the number of people who are using the food pantry at Douglass Community Services (DCS) in Hannibal.

When DCS was closed for five days due to weather they needed to find a way to get food to the 60 to 80 families that depend on them. The organization was forced to think outside the box so their food pantry could continue helping those in need.

DCS explored other options people had for getting food in Hannibal, and they began publicizing and supporting those options.

"The free little pantries, we advertised those places and then we took extra food from our emergency food pantry and filled those little pantries," said director of the Community Outreach Initiative at Douglass Community Services, Stacey Nicholas.

"Then if we're not open someone could go to one of those pantries and at least get a day's worth of food to carry them through."

Douglass Community Services' food pantry reopened at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. By 10:30 am, the food pantry had served 25 visitors.
