If you celebrate Easter in the religious sense, you likely also observe the season of Lent. This season starts on Ash Wednesday, which falls on Wednesday, February 17 this year, and lasts through Holy Thursday (Thursday, April 1). The purpose of Lent is to prepare for Easter by repenting for sins which is why many people give something up—whether it be a food, bad habit, or some other behavior—as a way of seeking forgiveness throughout the 40 days of the season.
Those who choose to do so usually elect to give up something they thoroughly enjoy or depend on, so choosing what to forego for Lent is a very individual experience. If you're participating but aren't sure where to begin, here are some ideas to get you started.
Chocolate
Probably one of the most common things to give up for Lent, according to The Independent, is chocolate. It's likely because almost everyone loves it and eats it quite frequently without depending on it for nutritional purposes. Giving up chocolate also means you would be cutting out other desserts that include it, like cookies, candies, and cake, so it would be a good exercise of willpower that will make you so thankful when you can eat it again.
Coffee
Coffee is a beverage that many people depend on to start their day but that sense of dependence can lead to over-consuming caffeine or spending way too much money during your daily Starbucks run. Switching out your daily cup for a mug of hot tea or making a pact to make your own morning drink rather than going to the drive-thru is a good way to stay on track.
Meat
For those curious about the plant-based lifestyle, the 40 days of Lent are a good opportunity to try out the vegan life. With a short-term goal leading you through, you may be surprised how creative you get with your cooking.
Smoking or Drinking
You don't have to give up one specific item—you can opt to abstain from a behavior if you choose. Things like smoking or drinking alcohol are good options if you have been thinking about quitting and want a reason to finally go for it.
Social Media
These days, staring at your phone screen and switching back and forth between Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat in a constant loop is an addiction in and of itself. Lessening your daily screen time can lead to better sleep, less headaches, and more productivity, so deleting your accounts off your phone for 40 days would be a nice reset.
Sleeping In
We all wish we could have more hours in a day, but if you find yourself sleeping in too much, you could start waking up just 30 minutes earlier to accomplish something at the start of the day. Use those extra 30 minutes to have a more mindful breakfast or take a short walk outside before your going about your morning.
Speaking Poorly About Others (Including Yourself)
Gossiping: We've all done it, but no one ever says they feel refreshed or recharged after venting about someone else. Speaking negatively about others doesn't give you any peace of mind and, in fact, might make you feel worse. This also includes speaking poorly about yourself, so suspend the habit of negative self talk and self doubt for the season.
